Premiere Birth Tools

The Peanut Ball Training with Wendy Proctor

The newest birthing tool for shorter and more efficient labour and delivery

About the Peanut Ball

I completed my training with Premier Birth Tools earlier this year, and found that I am the only authorised trainer in the UK.

Different positions are taught using the peanut ball, which gives their baby space to descend through the inlet, rotate within the middle pelvis, and emerge from the outlet. This may result in a shorter and more efficient labour and birth process. Research shows peanut balls reduce caesarean rates, in addition according to the World Health Organization, peanut balls may be an effective tool for changing positions often without disturbing the labour process.

Because of the interest I received not just in the UK, but around the world, I’ve created an e-Learning Peanut Ball Training course you can take at your own pace. My Learning Management System (LMS) divides the course into Lessons and Topics, with written explanations recorded as well. You can buy the Peanut Ball Positions Slides from my shop too, which show different positions for each pelvic station. You’ll get an email with a certificate to add to your CPD once you pass the test and assessment.

Although they’ve been around for a while, they’re one of the newest birth tools. They can be used with or without an epidural, for labour dystocia, and even during pregnancy.

A peanut ball isn’t just for comfort, it can also ease labour pain and shorten labor. Tussey and Botsios did an RCT in 2011 on epidurals and peanut balls. The first stage of labour was reduced by more than 90 minutes, and the second stage by 22 minutes. The use of vacuum extraction, forceps, and caesarean birth also decreased. In the RCT, they only used one peanut ball in one position, so if they had used more positions, further reductions could have been achieved.

  • Do you have all four sizes of peanut balls on your unit?
  • Did you know there are now over 50 peanut ball positions?
  • Do you know how to size peanut balls correctly for each patient?
